How it all began
“He’s everything I was looking for! I have found my match!”
— Jun
“I thought she was amazing - she is so talented and kind!”
— Luke
How did you both meet?
Jun: We met during freshers' week at the University of Glasgow Queen Margaret Students' Union on a night out! We bonded over being new medical students, playing musical instruments and being made to go to Chinese school in a desperate attempt from our parents to keep our Chinese roots.
Luke: I met Jun for the first time on the first night of fresher's week on the steps of QMU. We were in the same year on the same course which led to plenty of encounters, and eventually to me asking Jun on a date roughly 12 months later!
What is the first impression of each other?
Jun: The first thing I noticed was how handsome he looked and then his charming accent!
Luke: During a party at Jun's flat, she played the most beautiful song on the piano - I remember being so impressed at how she played with such emotion and elegance. We went out on our first date shortly after - I guess I was hooked from the first note!
Who asked who out first?
Jun: On a Saturday in October 2016, we were both at a neurology conference (!). After this Luke walked me all the way home and asked me out to a movie and dinner date.
Luke: Being in the same year we naturally saw each other quite often, we played badminton together where we realised we both shared a passion for classical music. We played together with Jun on the piano while I tried my best to keep up on the violin, and I eventually plucked up the courage to ask Jun on a date - the rest is history!
What was the first gift you gave each other?
Jun: Nutella-stuffed cookies - my favourite thing to bake! I still have the crumpled up recipe sheet which I use to this day. Luke bought me a wooden turtle from the Christmas market to add to my collection!
Luke: For Christmas in 2016, Jun got me a lovely card and a box of cookies that she baked herself. She had told me she was collecting turtle figurines so I gave Jun a wooden turtle from the Christmas market.
What cute habit does she/he have?
Jun: Luke loves shortcuts and making life easier. If he encounters a problem, he will aim to fix it ASAP. We get all sorts of random 'parts' so he can tinker with things around the house. He has managed to build apps to automate and control just about everything, from the exact temperature of the room, to the sprinklers in the garden and the intensity of the lights! He is a perfectionist and won’t stop until things are just right.
Luke: Jun is a bit of a hoarder - not only in the physical realm but also in the digital... grocery receipts, Amazon envelopes and boxes, scrap bits of paper, she refuses to delete any of the many many photos she takes and even refuses to close tabs on Chrome! (I have seen over 100 tabs!!)
What is your favourite thing about each other?
Jun: Luke has incredibly sound morals. He will do what is right for others rather than putting his own interests first. I really respect his opinion and how he thinks very objectively. I want to add a second one - I also admire his constant self improvement. He will look to better himself in all parts of his life and is always open to new ways of thinking, never being one to be stubborn.
Luke: I love how organised and forward planning Jun is. She always wants to have a plan and minimise wasted time. She can also be a bit last minute, but even if that's the case she will get it done which I find very impressive!
What object can she/he not live without?
Jun: Probably his laptop - he does everything on there! If he wasn't a doctor, he would probably have made an excellent computer scientist.
Luke: Her phone - she refuses to sleep without spending at least half an hour in bed on her phone, even when she complains to me about going to bed too late... I cannot separate her from her phone!
What was your favourite trip?
Jun: Our wild adventure in Turkey. We went to several cities, including Cappadocia, Istanbul and Ephesus. It is a country full of contrasting out-of-this-world landscapes and we had fun experiences on cross-country overnight buses and trying different foods.
Luke: My favourite trip was our trip to Greece - we spent just over 2 weeks exploring the fascinating history (and food) in Athens. Some particularly memorable moments were soaking in the sun on the pink sand at Elafonisi beach, and relaxing on a boat trip around Santorini.
Talk us through the proposal day
Jun: In May 2024, we were hiking in Positano, Italy and on the way down, Luke also got down on one knee!
Luke: We were on a trip to the Amalfi coast, we woke up to hike the Path of the Gods down to Positano. During a turn with a spectacular view, I asked Jun to marry me - thankfully she said yes! We celebrated with a hillside lunch and spent the rest of the evening in Positano!
Describe your journey as a couple over the years
Jun and Luke: We complement each other very well, supporting each other through life's ups and downs. Where one of us falls short, the other knows exactly how to fill that gap. We completed medical school, moved to London for our foundation jobs, then to Birmingham, and bought our first home.
In the past decade, we have grown together, and continued to advocate and cheer for each other, and will continue to do so as we embark on this new exciting chapter of our lives - now excited to move back to London as a married couple!
